Flu and COVID testing and respiratory illness treatment in Houston, TX. Walk-ins welcome, in Spanish.

At Clínica Hispana Familiar 529 rapid flu and COVID-19 tests give results in about 15 minutes, and flu, cough, bronchitis and throat infections are treated the same day, in Spanish, with no appointment and no insurance needed, in northwest Houston.

What does the service include?

  • Rapid influenza A and B test with a nasal swab
  • Rapid COVID-19 antigen test
  • Rapid strep test when the sore throat calls for it
  • Ear, throat and lung exam, and oxygen measurement
  • Treatment of flu, cough, bronchitis, sinusitis and throat infections

When should I get tested?

The flu test is most accurate in the first 3 to 4 days of symptoms. The COVID-19 test is recommended from the first day of symptoms or 5 days after close contact. If the COVID test is negative but symptoms continue, it is repeated after 48 hours.

What is the visit like, step by step?

  1. 1Symptoms, start date and contact with sick people are recorded.
  2. 2Vital signs, temperature and oxygen saturation are taken.
  3. 3The nasal swab is done; the result is ready in about 15 minutes.
  4. 4The medical team prescribes treatment and isolation measures.

Is there a specific treatment?

  • Flu: antivirals work best when started within the first 48 hours of symptoms and shorten the illness by about a day.
  • COVID-19: antiviral treatment is available for people with risk factors if started within the first 5 days.
  • Colds and viral bronchitis: symptom treatment; antibiotics are only prescribed when there is a bacterial infection.

How long am I contagious?

Flu spreads from one day before symptoms until 5 to 7 days after. With COVID-19, stay home until you have been fever-free for 24 hours and improving, then wear a mask for 5 more days.

When should I go to the ER?

Trouble breathing, chest pain, bluish lips, confusion, fever that does not come down with medication, or oxygen saturation below 92% need emergency care. Babies under 3 months with a fever should go to the ER.

How can I prevent the flu?

The annual flu vaccine is available at the clinic, ideally between September and October.

How does payment work?

You don't need health insurance. Pricing is self-pay, cash and cards are accepted, and you can ask for the cost of the service by phone or WhatsApp before your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

01Which rapid tests do you run if I have a fever and a cough?

A nasal swab for influenza A and B and a rapid COVID-19 antigen test; if your throat is very sore, a strep test too. They are rapid tests and the result comes back during the visit, along with an oxygen reading.

02When is the best time to come in for testing?

The flu test is most accurate in the first days of symptoms. The COVID-19 test can be done from the first day of symptoms or 5 days after a close contact; if it is negative and symptoms continue, it is repeated.

03Will I get an antiviral or an antibiotic?

It depends on the result. Flu antivirals work best when started early, and there is a COVID-19 antiviral for people with risk factors. Antibiotics are only given for a bacterial infection, not for a cold or viral bronchitis.

04Which breathing symptoms mean going to the ER?

Trouble breathing, chest pain, bluish lips, confusion, a fever that will not come down with medication, or oxygen below 92%. A baby under 3 months with a fever should go straight to the ER.

05Can I get my flu shot at the clinic?

Yes, the annual flu vaccine is available at the FM 529 clinic, ideally between September and October. If you have a fever today, it is better to wait until you recover before getting it.
