Thyroid Testing & Treatment

Thyroid testing and treatment in Houston, TX. Lab tests and follow-up in Spanish, with affordable pricing.

At Clínica Hispana Familiar 529 the thyroid is evaluated with blood tests (TSH, T3 and T4) and treatment for hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism is started or adjusted, in Spanish and without insurance, in northwest Houston. No appointment needed.

What does the thyroid service include?

  • Symptom evaluation and neck exam
  • Thyroid function tests: TSH, free T4 and T3
  • Diagnosis of hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism
  • Treatment start and dose adjustment
  • In-clinic thyroid ultrasound when nodules need to be seen
  • Regular follow-up with repeat labs

What are the symptoms of a thyroid problem?

  • Hypothyroidism (slow thyroid): fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, low mood
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid): nervousness, palpitations, weight loss, heat and sweating, tremor, insomnia
  • In both: menstrual changes and trouble concentrating

How is the TSH test interpreted?

The normal TSH range is roughly 0.4 to 4.0 mIU/L. A high value means the thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism) and a low value means it is overactive (hyperthyroidism). Free T4 confirms the diagnosis. No fasting is required.

What is the treatment like?

  1. 1Hypothyroidism is treated with levothyroxine, a daily pill taken on an empty stomach, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast.
  2. 2TSH is repeated 6 to 8 weeks after starting or changing the dose.
  3. 3Once the level is stable, follow-up is every 6 to 12 months.
  4. 4Hyperthyroidism is treated with antithyroid medication and, if needed, an endocrinology referral.

What should I know about levothyroxine?

Do not take it with calcium, iron or antacids; separate them by at least 4 hours. During pregnancy the dose usually goes up, so tell the medical team as soon as you know. Do not stop treatment even if you feel well.

When do I need urgent care?

Very fast palpitations with fever and confusion, or extreme drowsiness with low body temperature, are rare thyroid emergencies that require the emergency room.

How does payment work?

You don't need health insurance. Pricing is self-pay, cash and cards are accepted, and you can ask for the cost of the service by phone or WhatsApp before your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

01Which tests are part of the thyroid check?

TSH, free T4 and T3 are measured in blood, along with a review of your symptoms and a neck exam. With that, the medical team determines whether there is hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism and whether to start or adjust treatment.

02Can I eat breakfast before my thyroid blood draw?

Yes. TSH does not require fasting, so you can come at any time the clinic is open. Bring your medication list, including calcium, iron or antacids, so the medical team can go over it with you.

03What should I keep in mind with levothyroxine?

Take it on an empty stomach before breakfast, at least 4 hours apart from calcium, iron and antacids. Do not stop it even if you feel well, and if you become pregnant tell the medical team, since the dose usually goes up.

04Do you do an ultrasound if a lump is found in the neck?

Yes. The clinic has thyroid ultrasound to see the size of the gland and whether there are nodules. It is ordered when the neck exam or the labs call for it, and the findings are explained to you in Spanish.

05Which thyroid symptoms are an emergency?

Very fast palpitations with fever and confusion, or extreme drowsiness with a low body temperature. They are rare, but they need the emergency room rather than waiting for a clinic visit.
