DOT Physical Exam - CDL License

DOT physical exam in Houston, TX for CDL license, same-day certificate, in Spanish. With affordable pricing.

The DOT physical exam at Clínica Hispana Familiar 529 is performed with no appointment needed, in Spanish, and the medical certificate is issued the same day if you meet FMCSA requirements. It is the exam required to obtain or renew a commercial driver's license (CDL) in Texas.

What does the DOT physical check?

  • Vision: at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without glasses, and a 70-degree field of vision in each eye
  • Hearing: hearing a forced whisper at 5 feet, with or without a hearing aid
  • Blood pressure and pulse
  • Urine test for protein, sugar and blood (not a drug test)
  • General physical exam, medical history and medications

How long is the DOT certificate valid?

The DOT medical certificate is valid for up to 24 months. If you have controlled high blood pressure, diabetes or another condition that needs follow-up, the examiner may issue it for 3 months to 1 year. With blood pressure between 140/90 and 159/99 the certificate is issued for 1 year.

What should I bring to the exam?

  1. 1A valid driver's license
  2. 2Glasses or hearing aid, if you use them
  3. 3A list of your medications with doses
  4. 4If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems or sleep apnea: recent records from your doctor and, for apnea, your CPAP usage report
  5. 5Your previous certificate, if you have it

What is the process like and how long does it take?

  1. 1You fill out the driver section of the medical history form.
  2. 2Vital signs and the urine sample are taken.
  3. 3The examiner performs the physical, vision and hearing checks.
  4. 4If you meet the requirements, you receive the certificate in the same visit. The whole process usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
  5. 5Submit a copy of the certificate to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) so it is recorded on your CDL.

What happens if I don't meet a requirement?

The examiner may request additional documentation or issue a shorter certificate instead of denying it. The most common cases are blood pressure of 160/100 or higher, insulin-treated diabetes without form MCSA-5870, and vision below 20/40 without correction.
