Stool Tests

Stool tests in Houston, TX. Detection of parasites and infections, in Spanish, with affordable pricing.

At Clínica Hispana Familiar 529 the stool test detects parasites, intestinal infections and occult blood, with results explained in Spanish and treatment when needed. No appointment and no insurance needed, in northwest Houston.

What does the stool test include?

  • General stool exam: consistency, color, mucus and food remnants
  • Search for parasites and their eggs, such as amoebas, giardia and worms
  • Detection of bacterial infections when there is diarrhea with fever or blood
  • Fecal occult blood test
  • Medical visit to interpret the result and start treatment

When is it recommended?

  • Diarrhea lasting more than 3 days or that keeps coming back
  • Persistent abdominal pain, gas and bloating
  • Blood or mucus in the stool
  • Unexplained weight loss or anemia
  • Children with anal itching, frequent stomachaches or poor appetite
  • Requirement for food handlers or paperwork

How do I collect the sample, step by step?

  1. 1Ask for the sterile container at the clinic or use a clean one with a lid.
  2. 2Have the bowel movement in a dry container or on clean paper, without the sample touching toilet water or mixing with urine.
  3. 3With the container's spoon, take a walnut-sized portion, including any parts with mucus or blood.
  4. 4Close it tightly, write your name and the date, and bring it to the clinic within 2 hours, or refrigerate it for up to 24 hours.

Do I need any preparation?

No fasting is required. Avoid laxatives, antacids and antidiarrheals for 48 hours before, and antibiotics unless prescribed. For the occult blood test, stop red meat and anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen 3 days before. For parasites, 3 samples from different days are sometimes requested because they are not shed every day.

When are results ready?

The general exam is reviewed at the clinic and the parasite analysis or cultures are sent to the lab; ask during your visit when yours will be ready. With the result, the medical team prescribes the necessary antiparasitic or antibiotic, which is handed out at the clinic pharmacy.

When should I come in right away?

Diarrhea with heavy bleeding, high fever, signs of dehydration such as dry mouth and little urine, or severe abdominal pain need same-day care.

How does payment work?

You don't need health insurance. Pricing is self-pay, cash and cards are accepted, and you can ask for the cost of the service by phone or WhatsApp before your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

01What does the stool test detect?

Parasites and their eggs, such as amoebas, giardia or worms; bacterial infections when diarrhea comes with fever or blood; and hidden blood. Consistency, color, mucus and food residue are checked as well.

02What is the right way to collect stool at home?

Pass stool into a dry container or onto clean paper, keeping toilet water and urine out. With the scoop take a walnut-sized portion, including any mucus or blood, close it tightly, write your name and the date and bring it in as soon as you can. Ask the clinic for the sterile container.

03Do I need to stop any medicine or food beforehand?

No fasting is needed. Avoid laxatives, antacids and antidiarrheals in the days before. For hidden blood, skip red meat and anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen for three days. Because parasites are not shed every day, you may be asked for three samples collected on separate days.

04When can diarrhea not wait?

Diarrhea with heavy bleeding, high fever, a dry mouth and little urine from dehydration, or severe belly pain need care without waiting for the test. In those cases come to the clinic or, if it is severe, go to the ER.

05What happens once the result is in?

The medical team explains it to you in Spanish and sets out the antiparasitic or antibiotic you need. Whatever medicine is prescribed at your visit, you pick up at the pharmacy inside the clinic.
