Strep Test

Strep test in Houston, TX. Fast result and treatment in Spanish, with affordable pricing.

At Clínica Hispana Familiar 529 the rapid strep test is done with a throat swab and gives a result in 5 to 10 minutes; if positive, the antibiotic is prescribed in the same visit. Care in Spanish, with no appointment and no insurance needed, in northwest Houston.

What does the service include?

  • Exam of throat, tonsils, neck lymph nodes and ears
  • Throat swab for the rapid group A strep test
  • Result in 5 to 10 minutes
  • Antibiotic prescription if positive, filled at the clinic pharmacy
  • Pain and fever treatment
  • Confirmatory throat culture when the medical team considers it necessary

What are the symptoms of strep throat?

  • Severe sore throat that starts suddenly
  • Fever of 100.4 °F (38 °C) or higher
  • Red, swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches
  • Swollen, tender lymph nodes in the neck
  • Red spots on the roof of the mouth; in children, headache, nausea or vomiting

Cough, hoarseness and runny nose point more to a virus than to strep.

What is the test like, step by step?

  1. 1Symptoms are reviewed and the throat is examined.
  2. 2A swab is rubbed on the tonsils and the back of the throat for a few seconds; it may trigger a gag but does not hurt.
  3. 3The sample is processed in the clinic and the result is ready in 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. 4With a positive result, you leave with the prescription. With a negative result and very suggestive symptoms, especially in children, a culture that takes 24 to 48 hours may be sent.

What is the treatment like?

Strep is treated with penicillin or amoxicillin for 10 days. Pain and fever improve in 1 to 2 days, but the full course prevents complications such as rheumatic fever. You stop being contagious 24 hours after the first dose, when you can return to school or work.

Why not give antibiotics without a test?

Most sore throats are viral and do not improve with antibiotics. The test avoids unnecessary treatment, side effects and bacterial resistance.

When should I come in right away?

Trouble breathing or swallowing saliva, drooling, neck swelling, muffled voice or a stiff neck need urgent care.

How does payment work?

You don't need health insurance. Pricing is self-pay, cash and cards are accepted, and you can ask for the cost of the service by phone or WhatsApp before your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

01How can I tell if my sore throat might be strep?

It tends to start suddenly, with fever, red tonsils sometimes with white patches, tender neck glands and red spots on the roof of the mouth. Cough, hoarseness and a runny nose point more toward a virus.

02How is the sample taken?

For a few seconds a swab brushes your tonsils and the back of your throat; you might gag a little, but there is no pain. It is a rapid test and the result comes back during the visit.

03What happens if it comes back positive or negative?

If it is positive, you leave the visit with the prescribed antibiotic plus something for pain and fever. If it is negative but symptoms strongly suggest strep, especially in children, a throat culture may be sent to confirm.

04How long does a child with strep stay home from school?

They stop being contagious after one full day on the antibiotic and can return to class from then on. Even once they feel better, they need to finish the whole course to avoid complications such as rheumatic fever.

05Why not just give me an antibiotic without testing?

Most sore throats are viral and do not get better with antibiotics. Testing first avoids unnecessary treatment, side effects and antibiotic resistance.
