Electrocardiogram (EKG)

Electrocardiogram EKG in Houston, TX, fast and painless. Results and care in Spanish, with affordable pricing.

At Clínica Hispana Familiar 529 the electrocardiogram (EKG) records the heart's electrical activity in 5 to 10 minutes, painlessly and with no preparation, with medical interpretation and results explained in Spanish. No appointment and no insurance needed, in northwest Houston.

What does the electrocardiogram include?

  • 12-lead recording with 10 electrodes on the chest, arms and legs
  • Interpretation by the medical team in the same visit
  • Evaluation of heart rhythm, rate and electrical conduction
  • Detection of signs of arrhythmia, previous heart attack, heart enlargement or electrolyte disturbances
  • Copy of the tracing for your records, work exam or surgery
  • Cardiology referral when the result calls for it

When is an EKG recommended?

  • Palpitations, irregular heartbeat or a feeling that the heart skips
  • Chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath or dizziness
  • High blood pressure or diabetes, as part of the annual checkup
  • Before surgery or before starting an intense exercise program
  • Medical exam for work, sports or physical activity clearance
  • Family history of sudden death or early heart disease

What is the test like, step by step?

  1. 1You lie down and uncover your chest, ankles and wrists.
  2. 2Ten adhesive electrodes are placed; the skin may be cleaned or a small area shaved for good contact.
  3. 3You stay still and breathe normally during about 10 seconds of recording.
  4. 4The electrodes are removed and the medical team reads the tracing right away.

You feel no current: the machine only reads the heart's activity.

Do I need to prepare?

No fasting and no need to stop medications. Avoid creams or oils on your chest that day, do not exercise hard right before, and wear clothes that are easy to remove. Bring your medication list and any previous heart tests you have.

What does it detect and what does it not detect?

A resting EKG detects arrhythmias present at that moment, blocks, signs of an old or ongoing heart attack and strain on the heart. It does not detect artery blockages without symptoms or arrhythmias that appear only occasionally; for those there are the stress test and the Holter monitor, which the medical team refers you to if needed.

When should I go to the ER instead of the clinic?

Chest pain lasting more than 15 minutes, spreading to the arm or jaw, or coming with sweating, nausea and shortness of breath may be a heart attack. Call 911.

How does payment work?

You don't need health insurance. Pricing is self-pay, cash and cards are accepted, and you can ask for the cost of the service by phone or WhatsApp before your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

01Does an EKG hurt?

No. Ten sticky electrodes go on your chest, arms and legs, and the machine only reads the heart's electrical activity; you feel no current. You just stay still and breathe normally while it records.

02How do I prepare for the EKG?

No fasting and no stopping medications. That day, skip creams or oils on your chest, avoid hard exercise right before and wear clothes that come off easily. Bring earlier heart tests if you have them.

03When is an electrocardiogram ordered?

Palpitations, irregular heartbeat, dizziness or shortness of breath; yearly checks with high blood pressure or diabetes; before surgery or intense exercise; work or sports exams; or a family history of sudden death.

04What can a resting EKG not detect?

It does not show blocked arteries that are not yet causing symptoms or rhythm problems that only come and go. That is what stress tests and Holter monitors are for, and you are referred to a specialist when needed.

05If I have chest pain, should I come to the clinic?

Not if the pain lasts more than 15 minutes, spreads to the arm or jaw, or comes with sweating, nausea and shortness of breath: it may be a heart attack and you should call 911.
